




Herzegovina-Neretva Canton organized third and final workshop for children on the theme of coastal area protection, as well as the preservation and care of plant and animal life in and around waters of Hutovo Blato, the Adriatic Sea and the Neretva River. Workshop was held on 29th April 2025 in Višići – small village within the municipality of Čapljina. The area around Višići is famous for its natural beauty with hills, rivers and agricultural land.
This workshop was attended by 25 third and fourth-graders. The workshop was held in English.
Workshop with an introductory interactive warm-up using picture flashcards featuring images of lakes, oceans, seas, rivers and swamps.
Children were encourage to think about the significance of water around us. They drove conclusions about what is good and what is bad for environment and nature:
Don’t litter!
Save water!
Turn off the light when you don’t need it!
Care for nature!
Use reusable bags and bottles!
Plant flowers!
Help with cleaning!
Volunteer!
Through the ‘fishing game’ importance of waste sorting and recycling were empathized and through a ‘fly swatters’ game the concepts learned up to that point was revised.
Through discussion importance of the plant and animal world in Hutovo Blato and generally in the world around us was highlighted. Children learned that 390 different bird species spend the winter in Hutovo Blato. As for fish species there are 22 different types.
The last activity was very attractive to the children because they chose what they wanted to do:
- Relaxing with nature creative activities such as drawing, cutting, gluing, writing environmentally accepted messages.
- Dominoes (key workshop environmental words)
- Puzzles (key workshop environmental words)
- Memory (key environmental workshop words and drawings).
After all educational workshops children contacted the involved educators with lot of very interesting and positive impressions.
