After several educational events for elementary school children, Office of the Primeminister of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton organized a project event for youth at Hutovo blato Nature Park and River Trebižat.
After introductory session where COASTRUST project was presented, event included a visit to the Natura Park Education Center followed by a boat ride through the wetland ecosystem with expert guides.
Young participants learnt more about rich biodiversity and natural values of the Hutovo Blato Nature Park – unique sub-Mediterranean swamp located about fifteen kilometers from the Adriatic Sea.
Hutovo Blato is known as one of the largest bird reserve in the region where 163 species of birds from 39 families have been recorded. Also, Hutovo Blato have 22 species of fish from 12 families and more than 600 plant species. In a special way participants were introduced to the importance of preserving the wetland ecosystem and nature in general. Second part of the event included “school in the nature” and kayak tour at Trebižat River – very important tributary of River Neretva.
Lectures on the importance of environmental protection were held by respected expert with years of experience regarding natura research in Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. This was followed by questions and dialogue between participants on topics related to nature protection.
The event was opportunity to increase and promote understanding and awareness of environmental protection issues among youth and to emphasizes biological diversity as a global asset of tremendous value to future generations.
Young participants expressed their enthusiasm about the event which allowed them to spend a day in nature learning about COASTRUST project, flora, fauna, swamps, rivers and environmental protection.
