On March 4, ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation and the Stewardship Agreement for the conservation, sustainable management, and promotion of the corridor „From Wetlands to Sea“ took place in municipality of Neum, the only exit point of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Adriatic Sea.
Memorandum and Agreement are signed between representatives of stakeholders from public institutions, sectoral agencies, scientific and the non-governmental sector.
“Corridor From Wetlands to Sea is developing as a natural continuation of the famous Ćiro Trail, using cycling as a tool for the sustainable promotion of protected areas and the hydrological connection of both areas. It is important to emphasize, also, planned educational activities aimed at education of children and young people about environmental protection. At the same time, the platform enables coordinated management, reduction of environmental pressure and joint application to the future public calls, ensuring that the development of tourism does not come at the expense of biodiversity. Finally, by signing these documents, we position Herzegovina-Neretva Canton in a broader Mediterranean context, making us a more visible partner on the European map”, said Mrs. Marija Buhač, Primeminister of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Government addressing the participants.
The municipality of Neum, as associated project partner has a special significance in the project implementation. Dragan Jurković, the mayor of Neum, in his media statement, emphases that it is crucial to jointly work on preserving the natural resources and biodiversity of region.
Guests at the event were representatives from DUNEA, Dubrovnik-Neretva County regional development agency, one of the COASTRUST project partners. Director Melanija Milić undelined good mutual cooperation especially regarding joint work and activities on protection of Neretva River that connects two neighbouring regions.
