COASTRUST presented at the WEGOCOOP International Symposium in Andalusia

01/10/2025

On 23 September 2025, COASTRUST was presented at the WEGOCOOP International Symposium “+BIODIVERSITY: FOR WETLANDS IN ANDALUSIA +GOVERNANCE”, held at the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences of the University of Cádiz in Puerto Real, Spain.

The international symposium, organised by FAMP and the WEGOCOOP project team, brought together public authorities, environmental organisations, businesses, universities and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge and experiences related to environmental governance, wetland conservation and collaborative management approaches.

Sharing the COASTRUST approach to coastal stewardship

As part of the symposium, COASTRUST project partner FAMP delivered a dedicated workshop presenting the project’s objectives, methodology and approach to coastal stewardship.

Participants were introduced to the key concepts and governance mechanisms behind coastal stewardship agreements, as well as practical examples demonstrating how stewardship approaches can be applied at the local level. FAMP also shared its experience in developing the coastal stewardship methodology in Níjar (Almería), one of the COASTRUST pilot areas.

The session was led by Antonio Cosío Guerrero, FAMP Project Officer, and Francis Cerrato González, U-Space Officer and Technical Assistance for the project. Through the presentation and workshop, participants had the opportunity to learn more about the COASTRUST methodology and its practical implementation in Níjar.

Building connections beyond the COASTRUST partnership

Participation in the symposium provided an opportunity to strengthen connections with national and international actors working in environmental governance and nature conservation, while exploring potential synergies with other initiatives.

By sharing its methodology and practical experience, COASTRUST continues to promote knowledge exchange and cooperation around shared stewardship as a collaborative approach to the protection and sustainable management of Mediterranean coastal areas.
