“From Wetlands to the Sea” Event Brings Together Children, Families and Cyclists in Neum

05/06/2026

On Sunday, 31 May 2026, the educational, promotional and recreational event “From Wetlands to the Sea” was held at Poštari Beach in Neum, bringing together children, families, cyclists and numerous visitors with the aim of promoting the conservation of nature, water resources, wetland and marine ecosystems. The event was organised by the Office of the Prime Minister of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton within the framework of the COASTRUST project, in anticipation of World Environment Day.

Through a diverse programme, visitors had the opportunity to participate in educational and creative activities designed to raise awareness of the importance of nature conservation and sustainable environmental practices in an engaging and accessible way. The youngest participants particularly enjoyed the workshops “Plant Flowers, Reduce Waste”, “Learning About Nature Through Play”, “Painted Pebbles” and “Music Workshop”, where they learned about plants, animals, water and the natural wealth of the “From Wetlands to the Sea” area while developing creativity and environmental awareness. Also, the picture book “Children and Nature” was presented, which was created based on the works of children during previously held educational workshops as part of the COASTRUST project.

The event was further enriched by a performance of the traditional Linđo dance by children from Neum Kindergarten, while Tambura Ensemble Mostar, who performed playing traditional instruments, provided a pleasant musical atmosphere throughout the programme. Visitors also had the opportunity to visit the COASTRUST project information stand and learn more about activities aimed at preserving natural heritage and strengthening awareness of environmental protection.

Prior to the main event, the “From Wetlands to the Sea” cycling tour was organised, uniquely connecting Hutovo Blato Nature Park and Neum through the natural landscapes of southern Herzegovina. Cyclists started from two locations – Motel Park Karaotok and Hutovo – following a route through picturesque Herzegovinian scenery and along the former Ćiro railway trail. Upon arriving in Neum, participants joined other visitors for the final gathering by the sea.

The visitors were greeted by Dragan Jurković, Mayor of the Municipality of Neum, which is an associated partner in the implementation of the COASTRUST project, and Nikola Prkačin, Director of the Neum Tourist Board and participant in the cycling tour.

The joint participation of children, families, recreational cyclists and members of the local community once again highlighted the importance of combining education, outdoor activities and environmental protection. The “From Wetlands to the Sea” event demonstrated how fun, creativity and community engagement can effectively communicate important messages about preserving the natural values that connect Hutovo Blato and the Neum coastline.
